FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONs For Volunteers

Who can volunteer?

Any UCLA undergraduate is welcome to volunteer! We appreciate committed individuals that have a passion for dancing and disability justice.

How much commitment is needed?

We require teachers to take part in ten 1 hour classes each quarter along with socials, fundraisers, and group meetings. The average commitment a quarter will be around 20 hours. For crew members, individuals are required to make a presentation at one of our meetings about an aspect of disability justice and help out with recitals. Crew members are also expected to participate in socials and fundraisers. The commitment for a crew member varies, but an average would be around 15 hours per quarter.

How much dance experience do I need?

There is NO dance experience needed! We are just looking for enthusiastic volunteers!

Difference between teacher and crew member?

A teacher is paired with a buddy, where they will dance one-on-one with their dancer. Teachers are responsible for carrying out the Class Plan that is given by our Artistic Directors. Crew Members are responsible for recital preparation and expanding our knowledge of the intersectionality between the dance and disability space by presenting in our group meetings.

How classes are structured?

We have two different types of classes that alternate every week: Group Classes and Buddy Classes. Group Classes are led primarily by our amazing Artistic Directors. For Buddy Classes, teachers are paired one-on-one with a buddy where they will follow a class plan created by our Artistic Directors.

Dance classes are usually structured with a warm-up, across the floor, combination (short dance), and finally a game! This can be varied though!

What type of dance is taught?

EMI focuses on very basic elements of dance focused in ballet, jazz, and hip-hop.
